New location: Frankfurt am Main

We are thrilled to announce the development of the new location “Frankfurt am Main”!

DE-CIX has provided us with some colocation for our network infrastructure, out-of-band access and a 10G peering port at DE-CIX at the Interxion-FRA4 site. A limited number of cross connects to sponsors and communities are also provided to us free of charge by DE-CIX and Interxion. The other end of these cross connects only needs to be within the Interxion colocations on campus.

The two switches for the site were provided to us by Freifunk Rheinland. These were sponsored by Arista Networks.

The peering LAN is connected between Berlin and Frankfurt. Here, RETN GmbH provides an L2VPN with a bandwidth of up to 5Gbit/s. RETN is also already an IP-Transit sponsor in Berlin.

We will most likely move one of the route servers to Frankfurt as well, and then preferentially deliver the local prefixes per Community-IX site to the communities in each location. Since bandwidth between Berlin and Frankfurt is a limited resource, we would like to ask all communities to use it sparingly. If the traffic of a community connected in Berlin can go to a sponsor in Berlin, it does not make sense to transport it to Frankfurt first. We ask you to consider this in the interest of all communities. Traffic between communities is also exchanged across sites.

We already have a new sponsor and three communities (Freifunk Frankfurt, Freifunk Rhein-Neckar, Freifunk Rheinland) in the queue and will hopefully be able to connect them soon.
